Lady Modiford’s and Meavy Primary schools are Church of England Voluntary Aided schools. Within this specifically Christian environment we aim to provide religious education in accordance with the Christian values of the Federation, which are central to its life and ethos, and are vital to the realisation of our vision.
We aim to enable children to develop spiritual understanding, to begin to comprehend what it means to be a person of faith, and to accept and value those whose commitments, values and ways of life are different from their own promoting good and caring relationships with others.
At the West Dartmoor Federation, Lady Modiford’s and Meavy, we aim to meet the Devon Agreed Syllabus requirements (link) in which Religious Education ‘contributes dynamically to children’s education in schools by provoking challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.’
We use the resource Understanding Christianity which enables children to develop their understanding of Christianity, alongside their understanding of the world and their own experience within it. Key questions encourage the children to explore Bible texts, to examine how Christians put these beliefs into action in the community and the world, and to evaluate and make connections with their own lives and ways of understanding the world.
Alongside this we use Discovery RE to ensure that the children learn about the world’s main religions, gaining a greater awareness, understanding and respect for different faiths and cultures.
The two resources work together to produce a holistic and balanced RE curriculum. Every year each class learn about Christianity and one of the other world religions. (Click on ‘RE Curriculum Overview’ link below to see Understanding Christianity and Discovery RE rolling programme)
Class topics are linked to the RE topics when possible. The children are given the opportunity to discuss and reflect upon world events as and when they happen, both as individual classes, and as a whole school in Collective Worship.
